In order to get a better look at Florida Atlantic’s opponent on Friday, the Sun Sentinel enlisted the help of Navy beat writer Bill Wagner of the Capital Gazette. We asked Bill to answer three questions about the Midshipmen ahead of Friday night’s game.
1. People got a brief look at quarterback Zach Abey last year, but what can we expect from a full season of him?
Zach Abey has all the tools to succeed in Navy’s triple-option offense. He is a strong, powerful runner who does most of his damage inside, but does have some speed as he showed in breaking a perimeter run against Army. Offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper also says Abey has a strong arm, although we haven’t really seen enough of him as a passer to know for sure. Abey was not ready for prime time last season because he did not know the offense.
Jasper’s entire focus since has been on making sure the junior has a firm grasp on the option and is capable of reading defenses and making checks at the line of scrimmage. Abey disappointed Jasper with some of the mistakes he made during spring practice, but by all accounts has been rock-solid during August training camp.
