A first-year coach, one of the smallest senior classes in the state and a one-win season in 2016 aren’t the best ingredients for a successful 2017 campaign.
But Jackson Hole High School’s new football coach believes he can create a winning program, even if the wins don’t come in a hurry.
“We’re young,” Broncs coach David Joyce said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids that we’re building the foundation around. We’ve got a great junior and sophomore class. Our senior class has some really tough kids that have stuck it out. With only five seniors on the football team right now we’re just a really young football team.”
For the second straight offseason, Jackson lost its best returning player to its biggest rival. Two-year starter Ronnie Kaye transferred to Star Valley over the summer, one year after Josh Dawson left the Broncs for the Braves following a 2015 All-State selection as a sophomore.
When Friday’s season opener against Teton (Idaho) High rolls around, Joyce and the Broncs will have had just 22 practices together, only nine in full pads. Joyce is implementing the triple option, an offense that takes countless repetitions to perfect. He said the new system could give his young team trouble at first, but once chemistry develops between the quarterback and ballcarriers, Joyce believes the offense can give the undersized Jackson team an advantage.
