Defending state champion Falmouth begins its preseason work (MA)

Falmouth High School’s undefeated run to win the 2016 Division 2A state football championship relied heavily on a senior class that had played together on the varsity since their sophomore year. The Clippers scored at least 34 points in 10 games and beat teams by at least three touchdowns in nine games.

Falmouth’s offense made a habit of blowing out teams last year, most of their playmakers also doubling as linebackers or defensive backs.

That leaves plenty of open spots on the 2017 roster, and plenty of opportunity for the returning veterans to play bigger roles.

“We’re just looking for guys that can fill positions,” said junior defensive lineman Kyle Cardoza. “The guys last year were just amazing. We’re going to need guys to step up physically and mentally.”

This year plenty of new players will take the field for Falmouth’s opener against Bishop Feehan on Sept. 8 at home.

Coach Derek Almeida says even with the turnover, this season likely won’t be a repeat of 2014, when the sophomores who would win it all two years later went just 4-6.

“That was also my first year,” Almeida said of that 2014 season. “Everything was new. This year we have a couple kids returning that are good leaders. … I’m going to be probably starting a lot of first-time varsity kids, but they’re kids who’ve now been in the program for a couple years.”

About 50 Clippers dressed for Monday’s third practice of the preseason. The squad split up by position, as linebackers worked on their footwork and penetrating gaps, quarterbacks threw deep balls to their receivers and linemen lifted rows of tackling dummies.

“Not a lot of kids have that varsity tempo, but that’s what we’re working on,” said junior running back Trevor Nunes, who started five games last year.
