After running a spread offense and throwing the ball a lot the past two seasons, the La Salle-Peru football team is going to have a much different look this fall.
Cavalier fans got their first look at L-P’s new triple option offense Friday during the program’s “Meet the Cavs” scrimmage at Howard Fellows Stadium.
“It’s an offense that’s going to grind it into the ground,” third-year L-P coach Jose Medina said. “It’s not anything like we had last year, but we’re going to do what we’ve been practicing for the last two months. Hopefully, this is what’s going to take us to the next level we want to get to.”
Medina said ideally the Cavs will run the ball 70 percent of the time, but he’d settle for 60 percent, so the Cavs did mix some passing into Friday’s scrimmage.
“I still want to pass the ball a little bit, but the No. 1 thing is to ground and pound,” Medina said. “We have the big boys to do it this year.
“We have to keep our defense off the field, hold onto the football and let teams get worn out because of our offense.”
Medina was pleased with the hard running of senior Jeremiah Johnson, who missed most of last season after breaking his leg in Week 2.
Medina also said the offensive line “did a decent job.”
