Haven moves on from past, focus on present (KS)

As the saying goes, there’s no place to go but up, especially in Haven. But for the Wildcat football program that has been on the down end of an 11-35 record in the last five seasons, head coach Mike Hill has his team focused on the present.

Hill listed five pillars on the practice field Friday as the Wildcats were in full pads. The pillars mapped out a journey for the present and future at Haven. Those pillars are controlling the controllable, focus on the positive, focus on the present, and focus on the process. The final pillar, which Smith emphasized, is “I am because we are.”

The players have set forth on the journey Hill has mapped out with an increase of attendance in the weight room, which showcased itself on the field in spurts last season and the intensity in practice Friday. Haven finished last season with a forgettable 1-8 record, but there was a sign of growth. Haven averaged 400 yards of total offense with 350 coming on the ground in the triple-option attack. The Wildcats also scored 60 more points in the 2016-17 than the 109 scored in 2015-16.

“We want to come out as a team and play as a team,” said senior Wyatt Boese. “We want to get the underclassmen in. Get everyone in and be a team leader. Coach has seniors breaking down huddles. He’s teaching us to be more of a leader.
