Liberty experienced one of its best football seasons in 2016, winning eight games and reaching the third round of the postseason after its first-ever home playoff victory.
Yet coach Kyle Stewart will remind you, “It’s a new year. It’s a new team.”
And motivation remains.
“Part of that motivation can be, yeah, we won eight ballgames, but we lost five,” he said. “A couple of those were very winnable ballgames. We just for whatever reasons didn’t come out on top. We’ve got a lot of guys back, too. Hopefully, they’re hungry to continue what they started.”
Stewart noted a few key factors to another successful season. One is controlling turnovers in the triple-option offense. Another is staying healthy.
Then there’s the team aspect.
“Just playing together as a team,” Stewart said. “Loving one another. Supporting one another. If they do that, I think they can be successful.”
Stewart also is looking for leaders to emerge.
