PITTSBURG, Kan. — Football practice across the state of Kansas got underway on Monday and the mood couldn’t have been better for the Purple Dragons.
“It’s always good to finally get started,” Pittsburg head coach Tom Nickelson said. “There is a lot of offseason stuff that you have to do to get to this point, and now it’s just about football. … There is a little more sense of urgency but we just have to get everyone in a routine and get them ready to go.”
Pittsburg brings back a total of 13 starters on both sides of the ball. The key to success for PHS will rely heavily on the play on the field and leadership off the field of the 21 seniors.
“We graduated a lot of kids from last year who were very talented,” Nickelson said. “This group of seniors, I am not sure we’ve had any group of kids work harder. They have a big chip on their shoulder because they don’t have anyone who is getting scouted big time like we have recently and that’s OK. Their team chemistry is great and they are a selfless group.”
