Founder and Owner of the Flexbone Association. Since 2007 we have provided the tools necessary for teams to succeed running the Flexbone Association System. Over the last ten years over 200 teams have been instructed by the Flexbone Association. I've consulted with teams and or run camps everywhere from Belfair, WA to Key West, FL. The Flexbone Association strives daily to help coaches succeed with this time tested offense, I have been a football coach for 16 seasons, currently at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, GA I played at St. Mary's Springs High School in Fond du Lac, WI under legendary head coach Bob Hyland. I've been fortunate to be part of five state championship teams (1997,1998,2002,2011,2012). In 2011-2012 St. Mary's Springs led the state of Wisconsin in scoring and set consecutive school records for points scored, Psalm 27

75% of the Run Game is Four Plays

Ashley Ingram, Navy Centers and Guards Coach stated at the 2011 Navy Football Coaches Clinic that 75 percent of the Flexbone Offense and 75 percent of practice time needs to be dedicated to four plays.  Those four plays are Triple Option, Midline Option, Zone Dive, and Counter Option.  Coach Ingram stated that the Triple Option is a play that should be run 50, 60, even 70 percent of the time, and if the play is not, then something is going horribly wrong.

Chris Culton, Navy Offensive Tackles Coach referred to the 2008 novel, Outliers where author Malcolm Gladwell puts forth the premise that to be an expert in your field requires a devotion to one’s craft for at least 10,000 hours.  Coach Culton and Coach Ingram studied this concept and came to the conclusion that for a player to master his craft, he would need 1,000 reps in order to master his craft.  Their point was that you need to dedicate your time into MASTERING Triple Option, Midline Option, Zone Dive, and Counter Option as they are the plays without which the Flexbone cannot live.

So as an offense, association, coaches need to follow Coach Ingram’s and Coach Culton’s lead.  They, along with Coach Sewak at Georgia Tech, Coach Spencer and Brent Davis from Army, are the best Flexbone Offensive Line Coaches in the world.  These coaches command six-figures/year. We should emulate their strategy

There is importance in utilizing some compliments.  The Flexbone offense needs to utilize Triple Pass to neutralize the secondary if the play side cornerback or safety chooses to be the hero in run support versus the triple option.  Additional basic half-roll and drop back passes are needed especially for 3rd and long and absolute no-huddle situations.

When Coach Ingram was asked what the next best compliment to the Flexbone is after the Triple, Midline, Zone Dive, and Counter Option, Coach Ingram said the Trap.  Yes, the Trap play.  Coach Ingram said that if the 4/5 technique refuses to be logged on the Counter Option, this is what needs to be done to take advantage of the 4/5 technique if he chooses to fly up the field.

A lot of coaches run a lot of Rocket Toss.  Paul Johnson stated that there are two reasons why the Rocket Toss should be run.  The first reason is to beat the blitz when the playside linebacker blitzes A or B gap–this takes advantage of the fact that the playside linebacker cannot scrape over the top to catch the A-back on the Toss.  Reason #2 is when the 9 technique collisions the Offensive Tackle on Triple Option, in an attempt to prevent the Offensive Tackle from getting to the second level.  In this case, the 9 technique loses force and the ball should be pitched to the unforced area.

As a Flexbone Coach, your practice time must be dedicated to running Triple for at least 50 percent of practice and practicing Midline, Counter Option, and Zone Dive for 25 percent of practice.  After this, then is the time to work Triple Pass and the rest of the passing game with minor compliments like Trap, Rocket, and even Reverse.  There is simply not enough time to practice anything else, as long as you want to run the Flexbone the right way as Coach Ingram and Culton suggested.
