In a strange twist, Lenoir-Rhyne University announced today that Mike Houston will be The Citadel’s new football coach.
A Citadel official said that no announcement from The Citadel is likely until Thursday.
The Post and Courier reported Tuesday night that Houston had agreed to become the Bulldogs’ new coach, replacing Kevin Higgins, who resigned on Dec. 16 to become an assistant at Wake Forest.
Later Tuesday night, the Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record reported that Houston said he had resigned from Lenoir-Rhyne, but would not confirm his move to The Citadel.
Today, Lenoir-Rhyne released a statement confirming both Houston’s resignation and his move to The Citadel.
“Coach Mike Houston has announced his resignation from the head coaching position at Lenoir-Rhyne University to accept the head coaching job at The Citadel,” said the statement from Lenoir-Rhyne’s marketing and communication department. “Though the entire Lenoir-Rhyne community will miss him tremendously, we are excited for Coach Houston as he embarks on the next phase of his coaching journey.
